“The horror. The horror.”
It’s been a few years since I’ve read Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, but it never fails to amaze me how much of that novel has reached in to influence a range of subsequent media. Apocalypse Now is the obvious candidate, but I also fondly remember FarCry 2 echoed much of the journey and themes, and now Ryse has attempted to capture some of the spirit of the savage natives of the Congo, this time in what I understand to be the far north of the Anglo empire (Northern Ireland perhaps? Ironic because I’m currently watching the last season of The Fall at the moment)
Nonetheless, this setting serves as our scene for a great chapter in Ryse. Can I, once again, pause to remind you how beautiful the game is? I even stopped my wife to tell her how gorgeous it is, and she agreed!
I met some ethereal woman during this chapter, who we’ve seen in the past, but this time she directly engages with you!
The chapter culminates in another test-of-patience boss battle underneath the view of a burning wicker man! The sight itself is nothing special, but when it partially collapses, it changes lighting to make the who scene come alive. Some brilliant editing too.
