I was at the supermarket after group training last night, wearing my Sonic the Hedgehog T-Shirt when the cashier smiled and simply said “You can’t go wrong with a bit of Sonic the Hedgehog.” I guess it was serendipitous that I ended up having a quick session of Sonic this morning then, ending up with this achievement for doing … well, I’m not really sure what. The fast-paced nature of Sonic tends to mean that I miss a lot of things, but one second I was smashing through the Green Hills Zone, and the next I hit a spring, got thrown into the air, and then a brief interlude played as this achievement popped.
Long story short: I have no idea what happened.
What I did enjoy about the Sonic remake is the nice interweaving of 90s cartoon visuals with the game itself. Sonic CD opens with a scene that looks like it could be taken from one of the cartoon incarnations of the small blue hedgehog, though it doesn’t really aspire to tell a story – more give you the ‘vibe’ of what the hedgehog is all about. Trust me, as someone who grew up spending a lot of time between his Sega Master System and his GameGear … that was not a problem.
There wasn’t anything particular ‘new’ about this version of Sonic. I’m fairly sure I’ve played the remake before though … on PC I suspect … but I couldn’t tell you whether its my own childhood memories and seemingly endless hours playing games all converging in on one-another in my mind to create an memorial orgy .. but either way, the game plays and feels much the same like its original, unpolished self. I did see that there was an option to play as Tails in the main menu, though this was locked away for what I guess requires a full-playthrough, but if I can work out a quicker way to do so, then I’d be interested in having a go with my little Fox friend! I’ve been a huge fan of Tails since he first teamed-up with Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and I’ve considered him a stalwart of the series as other ‘friends’ continue to be added to the franchise.
Either way, I was happy to be able to get an achievement done this morning before I left for work. I did have a level or two of Trials of the Blood Dragon, but we’re well-and-truly at the pointy end of the campaign now, as level timers seem consistently eight-plus minutes, none of which I’ve been able to stay under for the past day – but still fun, and still challenging (much, much more challenging). The end is in sight!
