Off the GRID

ONRUSH • Reached Player Level 5 • 10G • 40.92% of gamers unlocked this

Sometimes you just need a good old-fashioned mindless racing game to unwind after a hard day. Today is one of those days. A full day at work, a full session at training, and an episode of The West Wing have left me fairly fatigued, and so tonight was all about the mindless racing and bashing of cars until I got to the first stop on my levelling journey on ONRUSH … Level 5.

More importantly though, I discovered a whole heap of very trendy games that have just been added to Game Pass. Ashen and Mortal Kombat X in particular just got added to my download queue, so don’t be surprised if you see these pop-up on my achievement list sometime in the next week!

And yes, then I’ll also eventually get around to South Park as well.

Four’s a Party

Brawlhalla • Played 3 games in the Free-for-All matchmaking queue • 15G • 25.18% of gamers unlocked this

I played some Brawhalla earlier this year when visiting in-laws, and it looked like a fun free-to-play game for mainstream console owners who missed the frenzied combat of Super Smash Bros. It was easy enough for my son to play, largely attributable to its simple controls of move, jump and attack, and some slight variations on those themes, and I like to set him as the benchmark for what he should and shouldn’t be in the lounge room watching the TV for.

I got another achievement essentially just for logging in, so I figured that a few games wouldn’t go astray. In the space of three games I managed to come last, second last and then second! There’s certainly room for growth!

Right now though, I’m falling asleep writing this entry – so I that makes a brilliant idea.

4 Move Win! — December 2, 2018

4 Move Win!

Quick Tic-Tac-Toe • Won a game in 4 moves

There’s something quite cathartic about noughts and crosses … but there’s also a sense of relief that comes with being able to earn an achievement while your internet is out for three days (technician scheduled for Tuesday).

This one was fairly simple, and it goes to my default noughts and crosses tactic of the ‘L’ shaped manoeuvre. I’m not going to beat around the bush … it’s an unstoppable tactic, and when even the computer AI struggles, you get a great sense of accomplishment.

Without the internet, I haven’t played a heap of my consoles today, so it’s another win for iOS.

Rayman Legends • Complete the “Mariachi Madness” painting • 10G • 14.27% of gamers unlocked this

Believe it or not, I actually scored myself two achievements in Red Dead Redemption 2 today … and I got some pretty good screenshots to match! But it is this achievement, in Rayman Legends, which I’ve decided to celebrate today – for no other reason than the simple fact that I managed to setup the blog post for this one first.

It is great that a family game like this can still surprise me. My son loves to ‘play’ Rayman, but it’s inevitable that he finds a bit too hard and he passes the controller to me … to the point where I end up just playing the entire game, so as a result, I’ve started doing it exclusively on my Xbox account (can’t miss an achievement opportunity), and when (and this is unlikely) he wants to play it solo, he does so in his account. The structure of the game in that they are short, sharp levels rather than a linear experience makes this perfect for this style of play, and – so far – it’s worked well for us.

Tomorrow is a busy ‘family’ day, so it might be a quicker, easier, mobile achievement if-and-when time permits. Wait-and-see.

Level 10

Rocks and Rockets • Start the level 10 (sic)

It’s not an uncommon phenomenon to have so many games to play and no real interest in playing any of them. I’m sure some psychologist could point to Freud or Pavlov or Maslow and reference some psychological phenomenon, but truth is it’s just a byproduct of contemporary society. The spoilt-for-choice culture has now inundated us with options, that our mind begins to shut-down and wants to choose none of them. Where it used to be the bastion of the gamer and their Steam Library, good ol’ Netflix, Stan and the variety of other streaming services have brought this condition to the masses … and aren’t we lucky for it?

As a result of this ‘mood’, I’ve settled for a quick-and-dirty game of Rocks and Rockets … which is a ridiculous indie title, but it has achievements so there. I wanted to play some Destiny 2 tonight on PC after listening to the latest IGN Fireteam Chat, but one round of Gambit (which I lost) was enough for me, and so I’m left clicking through the Steam store and seeing what options there are.

Spoiler alert: it’s not much.

Sometimes the universe is just telling you to go to have an early night and go to bed.

Rayman Legends • Pull 100 turnips out of the ground • 10G • 15.15% of games unlocked this

My son and I have been going through some of my old YouTube videos this week, and one of them was my attempt at the perfect run of the ‘Black Betty’ level of Rayman Legends, which, naturally, prompted a childhood urge to play it again.

Well, I can tell you now that the urge doesn’t really change between the age of five and thirty something years senior.

My first inclination was just to have a mindless romp through Rayman, but I was tempted with a look at the achievement list to see what was close, and so this one naturally stood out as being ‘nearly complete.’ And so, I did what any good achievement hunter would do … I started to grind. I knew the early levels would be a good starting place, and sure enough, the first level itself has a spot right near the start where you can grab 2-3 turnips really easily, so after a few minutes I managed to unlock this achievement, and – finally – mix up my streak a bit from the past week.

Side bonus: it’s good to be back playing Rayman.

I am away with work for the next couple of days, so I’m not sure what or where I’m going to plan in regards to an achievement – but I know I’m an innovative sort of chap, so I’ll certainly give it a red hot go!

Might be time to polish up the Vita.

No Encore! — November 19, 2018

No Encore!

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition • Silenced El Trio de la Muerte permanently • 15G • 14.27% of gamers unlocked this

I think a bit like Thomas Was Alone, Guacamelee! has an uncanny ability to position itself in a player’s brain so that – unlike other games – you retain the muscle memory and ability to play it after a long, long absence.

Tonight was a training night, and I am utterly exhausted after two competitive runs on the weekend (three if you include the kids’ dash I ran alongside my son in!), and so I wanted a quick indie that I could just let my mind wander in as I pursued any progress achievement I could. Guacamelee! fits that bill nicely, and while I wouldn’t say the slog to both get to El Trio, and the battle with them itself, was very easy – it was entirely satisfying … the perfect gaming combination.

I’m planning to be back in Red Dead tomorrow, but if I can’t find a poker hand, then there’s a good chance I’ll have to find myself a backup achievement.

Watch this space.
